What Is a Day Master?
In BaZi (八字, "eight characters"), your Day Master (日主, Rì Zhǔ) is the single character that represents you. It is the heavenly stem of the day you were born, and most of a BaZi reading is about how the rest of your chart, and each passing day, relates to it.
Where the Day Master comes from
A BaZi chart has four pillars: year, month, day and hour. Each pillar has two characters, a heavenly stem on top and an earthly branch below, which makes eight characters in total. That is where the name BaZi comes from.
Most people know their year pillar through their zodiac animal. But the Chinese classics treat the day stem as the self. The year describes your background and generation, the month your environment and career, the hour your later life and children, and the day pillar describes you and your closest relationship.
How to find your Day Master
Days in the Chinese calendar follow an unbroken 60-day cycle of stem–branch pairs that has run for thousands of years. Counting from a known reference date gives the pillar for any day. For example, 1 October 1949 was a 甲子 (Jiǎ Zǐ) day. The Destiny Kua calculator does this for you and shows your Day Master alongside your zodiac and Kua Number.
Traditional BaZi starts a new day at 11 pm, the beginning of the Rat hour. If you were born between 11 pm and midnight, some practitioners would give you the next day's pillar. Our calculator uses the calendar date.

How your Day Master shapes each day
Every day has its own stem, and therefore its own element. Compare it with your Day Master's element and you get one of five relationships, which BaZi calls the Ten Gods (十神):
- Companion (比劫): the day shares your element. Good for teamwork; watch for stubbornness.
- Resource (印): the day's element feeds yours. Good for learning, planning and rest.
- Output (食傷): your element feeds the day's. Good for creating and expressing, but tiring.
- Wealth (財): your element controls the day's. Good for practical work and money matters.
- Pressure (官殺): the day's element controls yours. A day for routine, care and discipline.

Day Master versus zodiac animal
Two people born in the same year share an animal, but their Day Masters can differ, because the day stem changes every day. That is why BaZi practitioners say the zodiac animal is only the surface. If a zodiac description has never quite fitted you, your Day Master may be the better mirror.
Strong and weak Day Masters
Full BaZi readings also judge whether the Day Master is strong or weak, meaning whether the rest of the chart supports it. That needs the month and hour pillars and a trained eye, and it is beyond what a daily reading can do. Treat your Day Master as a starting point for reflection rather than a complete analysis.
