Feng Shui vs BaZi

People often use "feng shui" for any Chinese luck advice, but traditionally it is one of several related arts. Feng shui studies space; BaZi studies time and the person born at a given moment. Destiny Kua uses both, and it helps to know which is which.

Feng shui (風水): the art of place

Feng shui means "wind and water". Its classical name is 堪輿 (kān yú), "canopy and carriage", meaning heaven and earth. It looks at how landforms, buildings, doors, rooms and directions shape the flow of qi, the energy of a place. The main schools include:

  • Form school (巒頭): reads the physical landscape: mountains, water, roads and building shapes.
  • Eight Mansions (八宅): matches people and houses to eight directions using Kua Numbers.
  • Flying Stars (玄空飛星): tracks how the energy of a building changes over time using nine "stars".
  • San He (三合): focuses on landforms and water flow in relation to direction.

BaZi (八字): the art of time

BaZi, also called the Four Pillars of Destiny, turns your birth year, month, day and hour into eight characters. From these it reads your elemental makeup, your Day Master, and how different years and days interact with you. It says nothing about buildings; it is about the person.

Where they meet: your Kua Number

The Kua Number (命卦, "destiny trigram") is the bridge. It comes from your birth year, like BaZi, but it is used to pick directions in a space, like feng shui. That is why Destiny Kua puts it at the centre: it links who you are with where you sit, sleep and work.

What neither art is

Neither feng shui nor BaZi is a science, and neither can guarantee outcomes. Both are traditional systems for paying attention to your surroundings and your timing. Used lightly, they encourage tidier homes, better routines and a moment of reflection each day. That is the spirit of Destiny Kua.
