Tai Sui 2027

Tai Sui (太歲, "Grand Duke of the Year") is the deity who governs each year of the sixty-year cycle. In 2027, the Ding Wei Fire Goat year, the Goat, Ox, Rat and Dog are traditionally said to "offend" Tai Sui. Here is what that means, which directions to treat with care, and what people customarily do about it.
What Tai Sui is
Tai Sui began as an astronomical idea. Ancient astronomers tracked Jupiter, which takes about twelve years to circle the sky, and imagined a counter-body moving the opposite way through the twelve earthly branches. Over time this became a celestial official: one of sixty generals who takes charge for a single year.
The general for Ding Wei is Miao Bing (繆丙). He takes office at Li Chun on 4 February 2027 and hands over at Li Chun on 4 February 2028. Temples use Chinese New Year (6 February 2027) for the ceremony, but feng shui directions change at Li Chun. See Li Chun vs Chinese New Year for the difference.
Which animals offend Tai Sui in 2027
"Offending" Tai Sui (犯太歲) means your year branch has a difficult relationship with the year's branch, Wei (the Goat). There are four kinds.

The other eight animals are not affected. The Horse (Six Harmony) and the Rabbit and Pig (Three Harmony) are considered especially well supported by the Goat year. Our 2027 Fire Goat forecast covers all twelve.
Your animal must be counted from Li Chun. Someone born on 5 February 2027 is a Goat in feng shui (and offends Tai Sui), even though the lunar calendar still calls them a Horse.
The 2027 directions
Tai Sui also occupies a direction for the year, and two related directions are traditionally treated with care. Degrees are compass bearings measured from your home's centre.

The simplest reading of these rules: in 2027, avoid starting renovation, hacking walls or heavy drilling in the Southwest 1, Northeast 1 and West sectors. If work there cannot wait, many practitioners suggest starting it in another part of the house first, or before Li Chun, and continuing through. The West also holds the 2 Black illness star in 2027, which is one more reason to keep it quiet.
What people customarily do
Visit a temple (拜太歲). In Singapore and Malaysia, many temples hold Tai Sui prayers in the first weeks of the lunar year. You register your name and birth date and the temple makes offerings on your behalf. Some people also go back near the year's end to "thank" Tai Sui.
Carry or display a Tai Sui plaque or amulet. These show the year's general, Miao Bing, and are often placed facing the Tai Sui direction.
Be steady rather than fearful. Offending Tai Sui is a reminder to plan, not a prediction of disaster. Traditional advice is practical: keep a routine, look after your health, avoid needless risk and be patient in disagreements. Some also choose to "use up" a clash with a planned positive change, such as a house move or a wedding, instead of waiting for an unplanned one.
How this connects to your Kua Number
Tai Sui and the annual afflictions change every year. Your Kua Number does not: it gives your four personal good directions for life. When the two conflict, most people keep their personal good direction for sleeping and working, and simply avoid disturbing the year's sensitive sectors.
