I Ching · Hexagram 51 of 64 · Pure hexagram
51. Zhèn 震 · The Arousing
By Destiny Kua · Updated
Hexagram 51 doubles the Thunder trigram: a solid line pushing up beneath two broken ones. Thunder rolls in twice. It is the shock that startles everyone, and the energy that wakes the world at the start of spring.
The image
Repeated thunder. The commentary says the wise person, in fear and trembling, sets their life in order and examines themselves. A shock is a prompt to reflect, not only to react.
What hexagram 51 means
Zhèn signals a jolt: news, a surprise or a sudden change. The traditional text describes thunder that terrifies for a hundred miles, while the steady person does not drop the sacrificial ladle. First comes fear, then laughter: after the shock passes, relief and learning follow. What matters is staying composed and using the moment to wake up.
Hexagram 51 in daily life
At work
Unexpected change or pressure. Respond calmly, check your priorities, and treat it as a chance to reset.
In relationships
A surprise may shake things up. Once the first reaction passes, talk honestly; shared shocks can bring people closer.
For yourself
Use the jolt: what has this made you realise? Put your house, literally or figuratively, in order.
The six changing lines
If your cast included changing lines (a 6 or a 9), read the matching lines below. Line 1 is the bottom line.
| Line | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Line 1 | Shock comes, and cries of alarm, then laughter. Fear gives way to relief: good fortune. |
| Line 2 | Shock brings danger and you lose possessions. Don't chase them; in seven days they return. |
| Line 3 | Shock leaves you dazed. If it moves you to act, no harm comes. |
| Line 4 | Shock gets stuck in the mud. Energy stalls; clear what is bogging you down. |
| Line 5 | Shocks come and go. Danger, but nothing is lost if you keep attending to your work. |
| Line 6 | Shock brings panic and staring. Pushing on now is unwise. If trouble reaches your neighbour but not you, prepare; others may gossip. |
The two trigrams
This hexagram doubles the Thunder trigram震 (Zhèn), the same trigram that belongs to Kua Number 3 in Eight Mansions feng shui. Its element is Wood. It is one of the eight pure hexagrams.
